RULES, INSTRUCTIONS & OFFICIAL ENTRY FORM FOR ART CATEGORY

THEME: “A Picture Can Speak a Thousand Words”

Artists should create a picture along with a title that will tell a story or convey an emotion. Think about elements that make your audience curious as to what’s going on and invite them in to explore. Expressing emotion through your art are also ways for your picture to “speak a thousand words”.

ELIGIBILITY: 

Work by all artists living in the Mon Valley and adjacent areas (includes Belle Vernon, Bentworth, Brownsville, California, Charleroi, Frazier, Ringgold, Monessen, Beth Center and Yough School Districts)

4 DIVISIONS: * Age 8-11 * Age 12-14 * Age 15-18 * Age 19+

ENTRY GUIDELINES

Entry fee: None

Entry form: An entry form (below) must be securely attached to the back of each entry. 

Entry limit: No more than one (1) entry per person. Each entry must include a title.

Artwork: Any 2-dimensional media. Mixed media is accepted. Only two-dimensional, original artwork, conceived and created by the entrant, will be considered. Two-dimensional means that  a mixed media cannot exceed an inch in depth. “Original” means that if a painting is based on photos, the photos were taken by the artist or the artist has written permission from the photographer to use the photos. MMVCT reserves the right to request proof of photographer’s written permission. Include a title for your artwork.

  • Use following sizes as a guideline: 8” x 10”, 9” x 12”,11” x 14”,12” x 18” or 16” x 20”
  •  Artwork must be matted or framed and ready to hang.
  • No photocopies, photos or computer- generated submissions will be accepted.
  • Artwork must fit the theme. 

DEADLINE: Drop off begins April 1 at your local library. Deadline: May 19, 2019

 JUDGING

Artwork will be judged on creativity, originality and execution of the theme. Scores will also be based on the emotional appeal and how the piece conveys a story or creates a memorable, moving image. 

 AWARDS

An expert panel of Judges will select finalists from eligible entries. First place Winners chosen in each  age category will receive a $100 award from MMVCT.  Generous community sponsors will provide additional awards. All entries will be showcased on the MMVCT website and be displayed in local libraries throughout the summer. Announcement of winners will be at the opening exhibit.

ELIGIBILITY:

ENTRY GUIDELINES

Entry fee: None

Entry form: An entry form (below) must be securely attached to the back of each entry. 

Entry limit: No more than one (1) photography entry per person. Each entry must include a title.

Photography Entries: 

  • Images can be in black and white or color.
  •  Size: Should be one of five sizes: 8” x 10”, 9” x 12”, 11” x 14”, 12” x 18” 
  •  No photographs printed on metal, glass or gallery wraps are allowed. This is intended to prevent damage to other entries. Traditional prints only are permitted.
  • Mounting: Prints must be matted and READY TO HANG. This means a non-abrasive (nonmetal)hanger attached to the back that should be centered 2 inches below the top edge. Put backing material (foam core, stiff cardboard, etc.) behind the photograph. Do not frame.
  •  Photographs that include sculptures, statues, paintings, and other works of art will be accepted as long as they do not constitute copyright infringement or fraud. When photographing the work of others, it must be as an object in its environment and not a full-frame close up of another person’s art.
  •  The Photograph and the Description, each in its entirety, must be a single work of original material taken and written (respectively) by the contest entrant. By entering the Contest, entrant represents, acknowledges and warrants that the submitted Photograph and Description are original works created solely by the entrant and that no other party has any right, title, claim or interest in the Photograph or the Description.
  •  Photo must fit the theme. Obscene, provocative, or otherwise objectionable content will not be considered, and such determination is solely at the discretion of MMVCT.

DEADLINE:  Drop off begins April 1 at your local library. Deadline: May 19, 2019

JUDGING: Photo will be judged on interpretation of the theme and title with emphasis on expression of  

emotion and the story one can imagine it tells.

Community Bank is sponsoring a special category for 2019 using the theme, and also celebrating a past or present activity, event, landmark or person that specifically identifies with the Mid Mon Valley communities.

 JUDGING:

Entries in each category will be judged independently based on the theme and special criteria for this  separate award. Entry must have a direct connection with the Mon Valley area to be eligible. 

 AWARDS:

There will be a minimum of one (1) winner and no more than two (2) chosen from either art or photography with a maximum award of $200 distributed evenly among the winner or winners. Winning entries will be displayed in local Mon Valley Community Bank locations. 

Winners in this category will also be announced at the opening exhibit.
